Drop That Ice Pack! Ice versus Heat for Injuries

It is interesting that ice is now in question as far as effectiveness in treating the acute phase of trauma.  As a parent, I reflexively offer ice to my children for just about any injury from bumps to fractures.  It helps to temporarily relieve pain and inflammation, distract the child from the trauma, and numb the affected area.   However, being an acupuncturist, our training in Chinese Medicine advocates against the use of ice as it “stagnates” blood and other fluids, causing decreased speed of healing and therefore prolonged pain.

Is it Safe to Self-Prescribe Chinese Herbs or Purchase Them Online?

In a word, well - in two words - probably not.  Acupuncturists go to school for a loooooooong time to learn the intricacies, indications, contraindications, and safety standards of Chinese herbs, Chinese herbal manufacturers and herb distributors.  So PLEASE check with an acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist before you purchase a formula on Amazon or even a drug store.  Your acupuncturist knows YOUR body, patterns, other medications you are taking, dietary sensitivities and other physiological nuances of your system.

BUT I'M AFRAID TO TRY ACUPUNCTURE - I HATE NEEDLES!

If I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me...  I mean, no one has ever come in to our office saying that they wanted to try acupuncture because they LOVE needles (aside from a couple of piercings addicts).  Needles have been given a bad rap - injections, blood draws, vaccinations, piercings... none of those are exactly comfortable.  But acupuncture needles are incredibly different.  First, they are not hollow like injection tools.  Those syringes are made for cutting through the skin, through a vein, and for withdrawing or administering fluids at a moderate rate of flow, necessitating a beveled edge and greater girth.

Integrating Essential Oils for More Effective Treatments

Recently, an article in Futurity Magazine, titled "Essential Oils Might be the New Antibiotics" cited some amazing studies about oils commonly used in our practice.  One study in Italy found that a "combination of thyme and clove essential oils was just as effective in treating bacterial vaginosis as the usual antibiotic treatment."  Although there are also Chinese herbal medicines to treat this effectively, adding these two oils to the repertoire is easy and economical.

Helping Your Baby Become MicroBionic

Helping Your Baby Become MicroBionic

Thanks to the Human Genome Project, scientists have been evaluating the intestinal microbiota shaped by millennia of evolution and uncovering the spectacular role of the intestinal microbiome in keeping us healthy [1].  The founding microbiome in the human body happens at birth.  This microbial inoculation is critical to prime the infant's immune system and dramatically impact baby's future health.

Immediate skin to skin contact is also important for transfer of microbes and helps to regulate baby's breathing, stress, digestion, and hormonal regulation.
